Speechlessness. Unbearable understanding. A sense of awe that everything has changed. These are the emotions that swept over the world when internet user Maxi Biewer posted nude pictures of herself on Facebook in 2015. At the time, Maxi was not yet 20 years old and already a prominent figure in German neo-Nazi circles with a sizable following online who were drawn to her looks against her political stance. She was a big hit on social media and not shy about showing it either with explicit pictures. The most shocking of the explicit pictures were those depicting her naked with a tattoo of a swastika above her genitals. Her neo-Nazi boyfriend Nick was also seen in the pictures and together, the two attended rallies and events with like-minded activists. Biewer's exposure came as a shock to many because she went to great lengths to hide the fact that she had Jewish origins, but her exposure raised questions about how far someone can go before they reveal their true Nazi affiliations such as Biewer's use of clothing as well as soap and face powder to cover up any visible signs of Judaism such as tattoos or birthmarks. The pictures were posted on her Facebook page to which she wrote, "After heavy consideration I decided to finally share this with the world. It's the only way to really get answers." Biewer quickly became a symbol of how far neo-Nazis would go for their political ideology and went into hiding shortly afterwards after the German authorities issued an arrest warrant for her ex-boyfriend Nick. The neo-Nazi wanted to "get his hands on" Biewer because he believed she was revealing his true identity in the pictures. Biewer had also realized that her neo-Nazi boyfriend was never going to let her go because he had planned to 'do something about it' once he discovered what she had done. In a 2015 interview, Biewer stated that her main concern was that she did not want to end up like Halit Yozgat, a young German of Turkish descent who was shot in a Dresden internet café by a right-wing extremist only a few months earlier. In an attempt to escape from her boyfriend and his neo-Nazi terrorist cell, Biewer fled Germany and sought refuge in Israel where she converted to Judaism. In the process of her conversion, she adopted the name Esti Yaari and became an observant Jew which ended her involvement in neo-Nazi activism. The neo-Nazi cell that Biewer fled from has been tied to at least four murders and the arson of over 100 buildings in Berlin. Biewer has stated that, "the picture of my sister in front of the burning synagogue in Wiesbaden and the swastikas on the trees were just too much for me." In an interview with Newsweek, Biewer expressed her views on right-wing extremism and how it can be defeated: "I think we need to consider the glorification of an anti-democratic political ideology (like Hitler's) or genocide (like genocide committed by Nazi Germany) as a crime. And I think we don't give enough attention to politics and politics education.
